PSA: your teacher does not have all of the answers

by on June 23, 2014

The following is a public service announcement:

You do not have all of the answers. Your teacher does not have all of the answers. The answers are not all contained within your school, group, or style. Recognizing this is the first step.

Next you must find another group with another teacher.

When visiting another group, you always have a choice. On the one hand, you can assume that they are wrong. This is easy, because they do not have all the answers. You will have no trouble finding evidence to support your assumption. Congratulations, you have wasted everyone’s time.

Alternately, you can assume that, whatever situation you find yourself in, there is always truth in what the teacher says. This may be difficult, because the teacher does not have all the answers. Perhaps they have fewer answers than you.

But know this: your collection of answers will never grow until you recognize that your understanding is incomplete and other people have answers.

You will not recognize a new truth until you are ready.

At least, that’s what I think – but I don’t have all the answers.
